Character Bio

Timid English Professor Nigel Pender traced his fingers around the tarnished silver letters embossed on the ancient black book.

"Bete Noire," they spelled. Literally, "Black Beast", a term referring to "thing most feared or avoided; greatest weakness; arch-nemesis."

"Well, it certainly *sounds* like this book might contain spells for revenge," the small man thought, running a hand nervously through his thinning comb-over. Maybe this time the committee wouldn't pass him over for tenure. Maybe this time the Dean would park in HIS OWN space. Maybe this time, Nadia, that exotic graduate student from Hungary, would. . .

Nigel pushed such thoughts aside. Angrily, his hand trembling, he jammed the worn key, for which he had so dearly paid, into the heavy brass lock that sealed the chains binding the great volume. He struggled against centuries of corrosion. . . Nigel was not a strong man. There was an audible click.

Quivering, he opened the heavy tome. His breath caught in his throat. . . .
