"You've got threats," the soft feminine voice chimed, when Professor Merriman opened his laptop. He frowned at the blinking skull-shaped icon. It was unlikely to be a prank -- Paragon University's eRansom application had recently outperformed Apple's trendy iKnap (tm) handheld extortion system.

He opened the message and scanned it quickly. The "hostages will be killed if you contact police," "small, unmarked bills," and "Urgent -- 60 minutes" boxes were checked, and there was a street address. No personal message was included -- classy. Just cellphone cam pics of five students.

He surveyed the rest of his desk. His popular lecture, "Synthesis of Physics and History, Part II: Ballistic Science vs Aristocracy" was starting in 90 minutes, and the table was littered with laser speed measuring devices, his old Olympic archery gear, and special inertia-conserving projectiles of his own design.

He sighed, feeling old. But he was still a teacher. There was still time to teach somebody a lesson.
