Character Bio

Everyone knew Abdul Alhazred, the Mad, was stealing children to be his servants. Surely rescue was imminent, Johara thought. But the corrupt secular government did nothing, and the local Imam chose not to risk his militia against Alhazred's demons.

Eventually Johara gave up waiting for rescue. Her body was still a prisoner, but her mind was beginning to be free. She ceaselessly trained in arms. Powerful magic imbued her with superhuman agility. Her senses expanded as well -- she could sense the slightest air currents, read someone's intent in the flicker of an eye, even, some say, see probability itself. She became Alhazred's deadliest bodyguard.

And finally she saw her own chance. In an instant, the binding charm was smashed, and she was free.

Her independence itself is a threat to civil and religious authority. One fears the mask, the other any woman who shows her face. Disdaining both, she covers HALF her face, and stands alone, helping those who can expect no aid from governments or churches.
