Character Bio

John L. Worden was a computer nerd working on a government contract, but he'd always admired the ironclad warships that fought in the US Civil War.

His contract turned out to involve examining prototype Rikti technology so obscure the Rikti themselves had never deployed it -- it was purely theoretical; only plans existed in a Rikti computer database.  Translated assembly instructions indicated it was a "time window", enabling one to view backward into the past merely by concentrating!

 When the device was finished, Worden was ecstatic!  That very night he stayed late, determined to watch the famed Hampton Roads duel, the first battle between ironclads!

Well, you know how those assembly-instruction translations are. It turned out the device wasn't a viewer, but a tool for *merging* the present with the past.

Worden had fantasized about ironclads for years; he knew each one by heart -- but not what it would feel like to physically BE one of those rusting, clanking giants himself.
