I wasn't the only sacrifice. I'm not sure how many others left the ice cave alive,
though. The Circle of Thorns had planned to bind a demon to the body of the first
victim. The rest of us were simply fodder for the ritual, tied down and veins sliced
open so our blood would pour like ink into the diagrams of summoning, protection
and coercion.

The first sign of their error was an explosion of fire from the body impaled on the
altar. They had just replaced his heart with the frozen heart of the demon when
he burst into flame.
