Irons' body was crushed during the first Ritki invasion. When Crey made the offer, Irons really had no choice but to let them use experimental cybernetics to rebuild him. (Hey, they had the technology.) Artificial limbs to improve strength and aim, and internal "adjustments" for stamina, and the ability to generate fire. While Brandon is "appreciative," he still prefers to rely on his rifle.
