This particular TA was already dating another grad student in the engineering department of PCU. All Jessica wanted was free tutoring. Turns out the TA's girlfriend was a gifted cryogenics engineering prodigy with a vicious jealous streak.
The jealous girl drugged Jessica and placed her inside an experimental cryogenics chamber. But, to both's surprise, Sumner survived. Somehow, the mixture of the drugs, her unique genetic structure, and the experimental thermodynamic energies gave Sumner an ability to drop her body temperature so low it chilled the air and water vapor around her.

Excited she created a costume and set out to become a crime fighter. Perhaps her brain did freeze.
