Character Bio

Taken from her family at age 10 with the words "Tu, amata, capio," Postumia Severa began her 30 year term of service as a Vestal virgin, a life of duty, privilege...and power. She and her 5 sisters were sacred beings, able to pardon a condemned prisoner with a mere touch, accorded luxuries and rights that no other Roman woman could aspire to. Postumia flourished, and became known for her wit and her sometimes scandalous dress. She did not worry, for so long as she tended the sacred flame, who would cross her?
Someone would, and did. Wrongfully accused of breaking her vow of celibacy, Postumia was condemned to death. In chains she was taken from the House of the Vestals to the Campus Scleratus, the 'evil fields.' There, clad only in the ragged remains of her stola, she was placed into an underground chamber with a small amount of food and water, and an oil lamp. There she was buried alive, but left to die. Yet the goddess Vesta heard her prayers. Miraculously saved, she was endowed with the sacred fire.
