Not every fairy is from a land of sunshine and rainbows. Some come from a much darker place, indeed. Silene was brought to this world by well-meaning mystics who lacked a means of sending her back home. She uses her command of darkness and the night sky to help those around her in hopes of finding a means to travel home.
