Character Bio

July 27, 1943. The heavy incendiary bombing of Hamburg was compounded by the fact that the streets were strewn with rubble from the bombing of 3 days earlier. The fire crews were unable to reach the fires. The intense heat of the caused the air above to rise rapidly, which sucked more air in below, further stoking the fires. As the air rushed in faster, the fires burned hotter and a firestorm was born.

The heat was such that buildings ignited without ever being touched by flame. The "lucky" citizens were in air raid shelters and were either suffocated when their shelters were evacuated of oxygen by the ravenous fires above, or merely cooked to death from the intense heat. The unlucky fled burning buildings into the streets, only to find that the asphalt had become a gummy, liquid, burning mess. If their feet did not sink into the flaming asphalt, the 150 mph winds sucked them into the cauldron of heat and flame that was the sky in Hamburg.

But not everybody who burned that night in Hamburg died.
