She wallowed, lost in the world endlessly in a mix of laughter and despair...but mostly despair. Turned on the TV news and watched some story about a blue-collar schlep who had finally won the lottery after playing for 20 years...just five years away from a comfortable retirement with a nice pension.

That was two years ago.

He just committed suicide after losing everything. The reporter droned on about how most lottery winners are unable to cope with the stresses of having received such a windfall. And, also, how many people play their entire lives without ever winning the big bucks.

Idiots.

Looking down at her own ticket, she let it fall next to the open newspaper, opened to the winning numbers. They matched hers, perfectly.

She picked up the gas can, spreading the fuel over the floor. Looking back, she made a promise to herself that she wouldn't allow fate to control her destiny. Ever.

She lit a match and tossed it behind her, flames meeting the match before it reached the floor.
