"Fight to live. Live to fight."

These are the words that a young John Bardiel came to speak as a mantra.

He was one of the 'lucky' few plucked from the slums of Mercy and experimented upon with magic glyph implanted into his body and burned into his left eye until the day they rioted and broke free from the shackles. After the facility had been destroyed those that survivored the battle parted ways, some found a quiet life, some made the journey to Paragon and would become heroes, John however stayed to his Isles and got work in Port Oakes for the Family.

When a villain called Drakmarth appeared to cut in on deals in St Martial, the Family sent Bardiel to take him out. When the fight was over Bardiel found himself at the mercy of his enemy, he was given a choice to leave, shamed to the Family or to become the first member of the Black Guard as Drakmarth's bodyguard.

He's never regretted his choice.
