Looking back, Christine Kelly can't even remember what she felt was so wrong with her life that led her to try to end it. During the months of therapy afterward, her psychologist introduced her to Markus Eisenberg, a former high-ranking member of the Council who had turned state's evidence against his former colleagues. Chris resented being forced to listen to the old man's stories at first, but the two eventually became friends.
After several months, Eisenberg told Chris his biggest secret, known only to leaders of the Council and a few members of the PPD: He was a Nictus who had turned his back on the Path of the Dark. He knew of the Warshades, who used their bond for good, but didn't feel up to the task. The next time they met, Chris volunteered to bond with Eisenberg's Kheldian half and redeem their joint legacy. Eisenberg agreed.
Shortly after starting her career as a hero, Chris learned Eisenberg had been killed by the Council. She mourned her friend, more determined than ever to continue the fight.
