Melissa Silvioni's grandfather Gaspare was a master of runic tattoo magic, which allows the bearer of runic tattoos to wield magical powers without the need for spells, incantations, components, rituals or even much magical knowledge.

Melissa herself was a disappointment to her family; she couldn't be bothered to tear herself away from her iPhone, her reality TV, and her shopping trips to focus on "dusty old books," "gross components" and "dead languages." After being thrown out of four magical apprenticeships, she began to beg her beloved grandpa to inscribe a runic tattoo for her.

Gaspare relented. His granddaughter is the light of his life, so he worked the power of the eternal sun into a tasteful butterfly tattoo, which he inscribed upon her ankle.

Melissa responded by becoming a reckless and flamboyant superhero celebutante, leveraging her beauty, fame, powers and reputation into several lucrative endorsement deals. Her family is more disappointed than ever.
