Character Bio

My father fought in Vietnam.

He didn't talk about it much, except when he'd had a few beers. Then he'd talk about it, some. You could see the darkness of those times in his eyes, but even with the alcohol he still edited his words for his audience. In my case, a lot.

But when he would talk, he'd talk about what he called the Sound of Freedom, and how it was salvation to grunts like him. The Air Force called it Operation Arc Light, the B-52 STRATOFORTRESS strategic bombing campaign along the Ho Chi Minh trail. It was the only thing that stood between them and being overrun by the VC as they made their way down from the north.

He brought the war home with him. In his memories, in his nightmares. And something more, something that now blooms in my blood. He's gone now. Like so many veterans. It's in memory of him, in honor of him and those like him, that I take this name.
