Once, he called himself the Torchbearer, and stood proudly among the ranks of Paragon City's champions. No longer. Neil Monk saw terrible crimes being perpetrated against the citizens of Paragon, and took action. For this deed, Paragon sent him to Ziggursky. The source of his power, the ancient artifact known as the Dawnstar, abandoned Neil as well, seeking out a more "worthy" bearer. In his rage and fury, Neil turned to terrible magics and forbidden lore, fell tomes smuggled into Ziggursky by those who still supported him. An oath to Nergal, the ancient god of death and flame, sealed his fate. Where the Torchbearer once stood as a beacon of light and hope, Ashfell would arise as the avatar of destruction. Vengeance would at last be his.
