Some heroes have it rough.
Vittorio Petcharelli's ability showed itself in his mother's womb, much to her fright. The doctors in her native Sicily were flummoxed as to the nature of the "defect", and labored for months during her term to discern the nature of this condition. But no one knew how, or why, this came to be. It simply was.
His mother died in childbirth. His father left months beforehand. Vittorio, who was quite healthy, was sent to an orphange in southern Italy, where he languished, unloved and unwanted, until a kindly old man saw him crying to himself one night. He was a street urchin at the time, scrounging for food and money, using his "defect" to survive. But survival isn't life, and Vittorio pined for the parents he never knew.
The old man took him in, and taught him that the monsters in the world couldn't be defined by their faces, or their beauty. He taught Vittorio, that, sometimes, a hero must shine through the facade given him twice as bright.
