Aurora Winters grew up as a normal girl. Possessing a fiery temper, she had frequent fall-outs with her family that lead to a life as a stereotypical bad girl. On her 18th birthday she ran off with her boyfriend, a notably unsavory character, who claimed he had a good thing lined up.

That "good thing" turned out to be an initiation into the Skulls. Not wanting to be part of any gang activity, Aurora fled and eventually found an old chapel to hide in. She fell asleep there, and woke up in the morning to find herself buried in the ashes of the chapel, naked and having grown wings.

She later learned that her boyfriend had rounded up some of his new buddies to track her down, found her, and decided to burn down the chapel with her in it. The fire awoke her latent mutant abilities, so Aurora decided to cast off her old life and make a new woman of herself.

Thus out of the ashes was born the Dawn Phoenix!
