Aurora Winters grew up as a normal girl on another Earth. Possessing a fiery temper, she had frequent fall-outs with her family that lead to a life as a stereotypical bad girl. On her 18th birthday she ran off with her boyfriend, a notably unsavory character, who claimed he had a good thing lined up.

That "good thing" turned out to be an initiation into the Circle of Thorns. Not wanting to be part of any cult activity, Aurora attempted to flee but was captured to be the initiation sacrifice. During the ceremony, the dark energies around her reacted with her latent mutant fire abilities to create a massive explosion. All that remained was a large crystal with Aurora inside, which was found by Portal Corp explorers and brought back to this Earth. The portal cracked the chrysalis, releasing an angry and vengeful Aurora. The changes made within the chrysalis fused her fire abilities with dark energies, and also gave her wings.
Thus out of the chaos was born the Dusk Phoenix!
