  Wanting to atone for her past, Nictus Apihelion came to Earth during the First Rikti War to follow the example of Shadowstar, Warshade leader and part of an ancient sisterhood. For months, she haunted the battlefields secretly, seeking a female host who would best fit into that sisterhood. She found what she sought in Nicole Moore, a wife, mother and superheroine...who was destined to die.

A well-known defender, Nicole (aka Empathy), was protecting a hospital evacuation during the Rikti's brutal assault on Baumton. The patients survived. The rest of her group, including her husband Eric, did not. Though severely injured, Nicole was still alive when the hospital collapsed, burying her beneath her best friend, Captain Superior. Api teleported Nicole to a pocket dimension for safety and merged with her, saving her life.

Recovered, Nicole came to Paragon City, happy for a new lease on life and to be reunited with her family.
