Black Agnes Dunbar "That brawling, boisterous, Scottish wench" Despite their defeat in 1314 by Robert the Bruce the English forces returned intent on conquering the Scots. They arrived at Dunbar Castle 1/13/1338. The Earl of Dunbar was away fighting English in the north, the castle was under the command of his wife Lady Agnes Randolph, Countess of Moray, aka Black Agnes for her dark hair & complexion. Agnes pledged herself to defend the castle. She outwitted the English commander at every turn, when he tried hurling huge rocks with catapults she sent her maids onto the ramparts to clean the marks of the shots from the walls, when he rolled out his secret weapon the battering ram, she signaled for large boulders to be dropped from the ramparts splintering it into pieces and sending the surviving Englishmen fleeing . Into spring the siege continued with the castle's supplies near exhausted Salisbury sensed victory, but supplies arrived via a 1/2 submerged door. After 5 months the English left defeated!
