It all began from the moment he could see.

As a child, he knew, with certainty well beyond doubt, that there were monsters to be found in the shadows all around us. A student of natural philosophy, Ivan spent his entire waking life seeking the truth of the sinister realm of shadows and whispering darkness, that hovers silently in the Aether just beyond our sight.

He studied and mastered the secrets of air, the mystery of water, the horrible truths of fire and earth, embraced the darkness of spirit. And still, the secret of the lands of Shadow eluded him. He cast his mind's eye into the depths of the earth, where no sunlight ever touched the cold rock, and found nothing. He touched the quivering heart of the shadow of our world, divining even the least bit of sentience. And still, nothing.

And one day, five years ago, in his dreams, the shadows found him. And, slowly, cruelly, they educated him.

Now, he knows exactly where the monsters are.

He will never, ever, be able to forget.
