Dr Earl Erickson was one of America's rising stars of superscientists that were appearing in growing numbers during the 1950s.  The rise began to falter, however, as familiar problems took more and more of his attention and time. His youngest daughter Emily developed clinical depression at the age of 6, and in the days before increased psychological knowledge and treatments, Dr Erickson decided to take a more direct approach to the problem. He worked for years on a process to remove the child's great suffering, ultimately discovering a means to physically extract the depression and 'distill' it down into a tangible mass! His daughter now cured, he turned his focus on studying this new material and its very unusual properties. Not only was it (at least to some tests) alive and partially sentient, but could psychoactively affect nearby subjects with strong malevolent tendencies. Dr Erickson developed restraining devices and a remote control assembly to guide this dark entity.
