Blind from birth, Virginia Talmadge nevertheless has always had an odd connection to the people around her. Finishing their sentences, feeling their unease and pain, all the things that make an awkward young woman even more frightened and unsure of herself.

Her uncle had a gift for her on her 13th birthday. "A magic belt," he said. "It will protect you when you are frightened, and make you feel better when you are alone. As long as you wear it, I will always be with you." Both of them knew he was dying, but Virginia played along, and after his passing took the belt into her heart.

One day, while working as a physical therapist for superpowered individuals at [hospital], she was showing her uncle's belt to a group of children injured during a super-terrorist attack. One of the kids remarked at the amazing glow the belt put out when she held it. Urged to try it on, Ginny donned the belt for the very first time, and heard the universe spin inside her head.

Her Uncle was right.
