When a jungle-like pocket ecosystem was discovered under a thin ice sheet in the Arctic, Dr. Patrick MacKenna was the logical choice to study it. He quickly discerned that the survival of the jungle depended upon an extraordinary plant he dubbed the "firevine". The vines wreathed the jungle, somehow generating a protective warmth and keeping the ice sheet thin enough to admit sunlight. They also proved to be the key to his own survival.

A freak storm destroyed his surface station and most of his supplies. The pocket jungle was too small to support him; his only hope was a grueling trek over the ice. Knowing that he would not survive such a journey, he devised a desperate plan. By injecting himself with a culture of firevine cells, he hoped to temporarily protect himself from the deadly cold.

It worked better than he anticipated. A symbiotic relationship developed, sustaining him on the long walk back to civilization. Once he recovered, he found that his symbiote had other effects as well....
