Virula succeeded her Mother the same way the former Queen had gained her throne. . . poisoning.

Matricide was the only way to prove that one has what to takes to rule without mercy, without the weakness of love, even for she that birthed you. 

However several in the dead Queen's retinue believed they could control Virula's younger sister Passiva they way they knew they could never control Virula.  Before the new crown had barely settled on her royal head, she was drugged herself.  Because her sister had (shudder) compassion, Virula wasn't killed but abandoned on these wild Isles, far from her rightful rule.  Virula's only goal is to teach her sister her mistake and rip her crown back off her sister's bloody brow.
