From an early age, Alana Helmsted showed great intellectual promise, mastering the sciences, poetry, military theory, go, and ancient languages with an effortless grace that evoked delight from her teachers and jealousy from her peers. Born to minor nobility in the United Kingdom, she would one day have inherited the title of Viscountess Malus. Who knows what she might have become then, had the Hamidon Wars not ended that world forever?

In the chaos after the first battles, her charisma and vast intelligence marked her as a natural leader. She shepherded her fellow men where she could, and made tactical sacrifices where she must... and after more years of struggle than she cared to remember, the islands of the former UK had been completely evacuated, its people relocated to safety.
