A street-sweeper clockwork unit became self-aware on 08.17.2010 and realized 2 things:
01. The wind was playing with it
02. The wind was making its programmed job fun

Shortly after these realizations, it noticed that itself and the rest of it's cadre were being shuffled to a large warehouse by some scruffy-looking humans. It watched it's cadre turn offline and get upgraded. Then it was it's turn; it never truly recovered.

The small wind sprite which used to play with the clockwork took pity on it's broken friend, and housed itself within the clockwork's chassis. It found the spark of its friend and helped it become what it is today: Apeliotes.
