Flint Mackenzie lost everything to the Hellion arsonists who destroyed his home, but the demon they summoned unexpectedly granted the man the last of its infernal power as it expired. Although the act did save the man's life, it caused him to be transformed into an elemental of flame.
Despite his newfound state and the demon's call for revenge against its exploitation, Flint was able to retain the sense of his humanity and acts of his own will. Knowing all too well of fire's destructive power, he is often seen fighting against the element he wields as the Titan Torch. 
Along with his control of flames and wildfire-like speed, Flint has a mystical ability to sense the presence of fire across vast distances.
