Character Bio

The technician stared at his watch, waiting for the exact moment of totality. Even as the quartz timepiece told him, he knew -- a kind of hush fell over everything as the moon slid into place, obscuring the sun.

Immediately the temperature dropped steeply on the Solcar PS 10 solar power generating station. 624 computer-controlled heliostats still tracked the sun, but the sun was blocked, and the perfect mirrors no longer magnified and focused its rays on the steam boiler atop the tower.

The technician slipped into the boiler room and began making measurements. The total eclipse would give a rare chance to observe how the equipment reacted to sudden, extreme changes in solar intensity.

What nobody realized was that the mirrors were still gathering and reflecting . . . SOMETHING. The moon's shadow, utterly black against the sun's faint corona, was amplified a thousandfold and focused silently on the man for over seven minutes.

He fell to his knees, feeling very strange.
