Metaphyte descends from an advanced alien race of plantlike humanoids who have harnessed the ability to control the forces of nature.

Metaphyte served as an ensign aboard an interstellar schooner called the Sunflower, which traversed millions of alternate dimensions on its way home. However, the ship was somehow drawn toward the Union Shard universe by Hamidon and it crashed down on Earth.

He emerged as the only survivor. As a stranger to this new reality, he tried to adapt to his new environment and became a superhero.
