Luckily the planet was technologically advanced and the scientists found a way to push the planet's orbit out, and make other changes to permit life to go on. This wasn't part of the Rikti plan, so they decided to destroy the star, using a new device designed to change the neutrons in the star into neutrinos, catastrophically dissipating it, causing the planet to become a wandering planetoid.
