During the last surge of fighting, he was sliced in half by a Rikti blade. That was when it was discovered he was a robot. That body disappeared before it could be studied and another Chalice Knight appeared almost a year later. The second Knight does not seem to remember any of the events of the original's career, although it does acknowledge that it is the second. No one know who created either of the robots, nor why the creator does not come forward.
