Asa is a member of a space faring race known as Variens, a species evoled from Silica  based life on an inhospitable ice world in the Caruxx star system.

Variens are predatory by nature, and so do not integrate well into other 'less dominant' cultures.

Asa is a very young Varien and is really just here having fun (like a summer abroad). Ultimatey she will return to her home to continue her schooling in the disciplines of political science and mass communications (she currently has a B).
