Brought under the wing of her Aunt, Tina Macintyre, she had been assigned to reverse engineer a Crey Pistol. It was believed that an extremely small yet powerful source of energy powered the device and the only thing that anyone could come up with was Cold Fusion.

Because she?d spent so much time theorizing the possibility of CF, Tony Kord thought that it would be an opportune time to put her theories to practice. He once teased her that she was so into Cryonics that she?d eventually get ?Perma-THO? and the nickname has stuck with her ever since.

Still not knowing exactly how CF worked, she began carefully tinkering with the weapon only to find out that it had a built-in anti-tampering mechanism. This mechanism triggered an overload that resulted in the sub-molecular infusion of Cryogenic material throughout her body.
